Christmas, the day when the birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated, is a festival of joy and love. Its true celebration is said to be the act of sharing this joy and the Christmas spirit. On Saturday 16th of December, a group of about 100 volunteers, belonging to different organisations under the project Nirmala Anand, organised a charitable fair at Baptist Church, Lodipur for some 700 underprivileged children, and celebrated Christmas with them. The fair featured various shows like magic, dance and singing; stall games like target balloon, Fish Pond, etc which featured presents; and a lunch.
I was one of the fifteen volunteers running the Fish Pond stall, and the fair was as joyous for us as for the kids. Kids at our stall were fishing, where behind the stall we hooked presents wrapped in newspaper for the kids, every kid. And damn! their expressions, the smiles we knew we were the cause of, which in turn made a very memorable day for us as well. The stall was a result of the contributions made by the first year undergrad students (my class *chuckles*) and teachers of mass comm. dept. of St Xavier’s College, Patna.
The fair is organised every year by a city network of voluntary organisations and socially minded individuals, under the roof of VIVA organisation, which funds Rs 30K and the rest is raised through contribution. This year, the fair was organised with the cooperation of Evangelical Fellowship of India Children @ Risk, Emmanuel Mission Fellowship Centre, St Xavier’s College (Patna), Baptist Church (Lodipur, Patna), St Karen’s High School (Patna), St Pauls High School (Budha Colony, Patna), Emmanuel Mission School (Anisabad, Patna), Asian Sahyogi Sanstha India, and Agape Charitable Trust (Digha, Patna).
